Mining

Mining, especially deep end mining like gold and platinum mines are powered by electricity.

Lighting as well as heavy machinery consume huge volumes of electricity. The necessity is fundamental and unavoidable. Mitigation strategies need to go beyond just turning the lights off at night.

Electro Sense is currently researching the possibility of installing sensors in underground tunnels that are only used at the beginning and end of each shift. The lights in the tunnels remain on at all times.

When the issues of cost and safety have been successfully dealt with, a product currently being designed and built by Electro Sense will be tested and pilot projects will commence.

In the meantime, there is an opportunity for mines to install occupancy sensors in their above – ground facilities. Whilst the cost savings that will result from controlling lighting in these facilities is negligible compared to the total cost of electricity at the mine, these sensor installations will showcase to employees and visitors the commitment the mine has to energy savings and reduction of electricity usage.

Products used on mines are subjected to stringent health and safety regulations and Electro Sense products comply with the Safety, Health, Environment (S.H.E.) act.
